Chi Friends is a private and non-profit animal welfare advocate group dedicated to raising awareness about Chihuahuas and Chihuahua mixes. The Perfect Dog Rescue, Pet Awareness Welfare Society for San Jose Animal Care Center (PAWS), and San Jose Animal Advocates teamed up to create an organization that educates the community about the benefits of owning this breed as well as the importance of spay/neutering and proper training methods.
This organization recognizes that Chihuahuas represent over 30 percent of the intake at California shelters mainly because of unwanted litters, the economy, and Hollywood trends. They also recognize that the breed suffer from stereotypes that misrepresent their true nature.
The group provides breed information (including its history, temperament, and common breed health disorder), bust Chihuahua myths (including the misconception that the breed is yappy and high-strung, they are outdoor dogs, they do not need socialization, they don’t need exercise, and cannot be around large dogs), offers obedience classes, and informs the community about small dog syndrome.
They also work together with the San Jose Animal Center to find new home for the Chihuahua under the shelter’s care.
