Since 1972, Citizens for Animal Protection (CAP) has served the greater Houston area by finding homes for unwanted or abandoned animals. Our adoption rate is 65 percent, which is one of the highest in the state of Texas. It’s also three times the nationwide rate, proving that we do what we set out to do.
One reason the adoption rate is so successful is because we have an extensive screening process that completely matches the animal with their new forever home. In addition, CAP provides humane education in the community that promotes responsible pet ownership. Some of the most intelligent animals get placed in our pet therapy outreach, where we take highly trained dogs and cats into nursing homes and the VA hospital for pet facilitated therapy. Science shows that petting dogs and cats provide many emotional and physical benefits.
Citizens for Animal Protection relies on volunteers for its 3.5 acre campus with a 21,000 square foot permanent facility. For 12 years running, CAP has earned a 4-star rating with CharityNavigator, demonstrating its commitment to operating as a 501 (c) 3 organization. CAP is a major force in the Houston area for taking care of dogs and cats who need a home.
